Education is at the heart of the Montreal Heart Institute’s mission. Since 1954, the Montreal Heart Institute has aimed for the highest standards of excellence in research, treatment, teaching, and prevention.
The Institute is one of the largest training centres in cardiovascular health in Quebec and in Canada. In order to save more lives in the fight against cardiovascular diseases, the world’s leading cause of death, the Institute believes the acquisition and sharing of knowledge are the cornerstones of high-quality, specialized care. Both here and abroad.
Excellence in teaching
Every year, the Institute’s world-renowned fellowship program welcomes approximately 20 cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, and other foreign medical specialists who want to hone their skills in cardiovascular care.
In addition to being an outstanding personal experience for these health care professionals, this complementary training program allows them to make a real difference in the lives of the 68,000 patients who walk through the doors of the Institute every year.
An institution where teaching lays the groundwork for the future
Affiliated with Université de Montréal, the Institute has acquired the status of a teaching hospital. That means that education is part of the daily routines of the health care teams. In fact, the Institute’s reputation for providing excellent training and specialization in cardiovascular diseases is proof of the quality of its teaching. International specialists are surrounded by teachers who are at the top of their field and they also have access to state-of-the-art equipment.
With its high volume of clinical activities, wide variety of pathologies encountered, available access to advanced diagnostic techniques, teaching opportunities related to precision medicine, and the opportunity to collaborate on research projects,
the Institute has become a choice teaching hospital for physicians who want to perfect their knowledge.
These specialists are known as “fellows” and they stay at the Institute for 12 to 24 months as they acquire a specialized training in a specific area.
Since the creation of the fellowship program in 1954, more than 500 fellows have been selected to be trained in one of the 11 following specialties:
- Cardiac anesthesiology
- Clinical cardiology
- Adult congenital heart disease
- Interventional cardiology
- Cardiac surgery
- Echocardiography
- Electrophysiology
- Advanced heart failure and heart transplantation
- Cardiac prevention and rehabilitation
- Cardiac magnetic resonance
- Surgical intensive care
At the Institute, the patient remains a top priority
The presence of fellows helps improve the quality and availability of ultra specialized care for Quebecers and anyone else suffering from cardiovascular disease in the world. Because fellows return to their country once their time at the Institute is over, they are able to put the expertise they’ve acquired into practice. This way, they are able to share best practices and help improve the care provided to patients in their own country.
The relationships they’ve forged with the Institute’s team also promotes the creation of partnerships with various centres around the world to implement projects focused on an exchange of ideas and cooperation.
