Diabetes, one of the main risk factors for heart disease, is rapidly on the rise worldwide.
Heart disease is the main complication and main cause of death for people with type 2 diabetes. Hyperinsulinemia and chronic hyperglycemia damage blood vessels which, in the long term, can damage the heart.
One in three Canadians is diabetic or prediabetic
Diabetics are twice as likely to develop heart disease
Diabetes is the cause of 40% of heart attacks in Canada
The Sun Life Diabetes Prevention Clinic is dedicated to the early detection of prediabetes and type 2 diabetes, halting disease progression, and improving patients’ metabolic health until they achieve remission.
The Clinic’s program is unique in Canada. Its approach is based on changing lifestyles and is supported by a multidisciplinary team of experts – physicians, nurses, nutritionists, and kinesiologists – who support patients in order to change the course of their condition.
Since it opened in 2019 at the Montreal Heart Institute’s EPIC Centre, the Sun Life Diabetes Prevention Clinic has achieved significant results:
The metabolic health of all patients improved after 12 months in the program
20% of prediabetic patients
are now in remission
12% of treated diabetic patients
are in remission
