Born into a family of entrepreneurs in Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean, Karl Blackburn gravitated towards a career in economics, public affairs, and social engagement. In 2003, he was elected to the Quebec National Assembly as a Liberal representing the riding of Roberval. After his term, he became involved in governmental relations and economic development in both Quebec and abroad. He also led the Conseil du patronat du Québec. All these positions leveraged his renowned ability to mobilize stakeholders around common goals.
Given his experience and skillsets, he was naturally drawn to the MHI Foundation.
Karl Blackburn’s enthusiasm for his new role also stems from his first-hand knowledge of what it’s like to deal with health issues. In 2024, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer and underwent surgery at the end of that year.
Fortunately, he has fully recovered. “I exercise a lot. I would even go so far as to say that I haven’t felt so good in a long time,” he said. This experience undoubtedly made him more aware of the importance of championing the mission he agreed to lead.
Karl Blackburn is stepping into his role with a structured vision and well-defined priorities. The first: provide physicians and researchers with the means to achieve their goals and bolster the Foundation’s ability to support increasingly ambitious projects.
“Progress in the field of science has tangible impacts. It helps patients, offers hope to families, and ultimately, saves lives. However, we need more than ambition to ensure that research, prevention, and innovation culminate in real breakthroughs. We need allies. We need a common vision. We need a willingness to move forward as one. This is the type of mobilization I want to cultivate.”
For the MHI Foundation, Karl Blackburn’s arrival marks a seamless continuation of its bold mission. He is determined to shine a light on the Foundation’s work and mobilize even more resources to the benefit of cardiology.
