A dedication guided by law, equity, and personal experience

As one of the voices who has shaped Quebec, Ms. Pelchat stands out through the steadfastness of her convictions. Today, she has made a significant philanthropic commitment to the Montreal Heart Institute Foundation in support of a fund dedicated to women’s heart health.

At the heart of this generous gesture is a two-fold realization. First, there is a widespread lack of awareness regarding the symptoms of a heart attack in women. Second, there is an urgent need to invest in precision medicine tailored to women.

Ms. Pelchat is particularly interested in the links between hormones, pregnancy, menopause, and cardiovascular health. She wants the fund to serve as a means to advance our understanding of these critically understudied issues, along with many others.

Resolute diligence, purposeful action

Ms. Pelchat’s feminist mindset has been forged through years of personal, political, and intellectual experiences. First, her mother instilled in her the importance of being financially independent. Then, a professor of sociology in CÉGEP made her aware of the systemic nature of inequalities.

At 26, she was elected to the National Assembly at a time when most members were men. An experience that reaffirmed her commitment to activism. Thereafter, her advocacy work in Africa beginning in 1998 and her exploration of writings by the UN, Simone de Beauvoir, and Gisèle Halim enabled her to structure her feminist theoretical perspective.

For the former Chair of the Council on the Status of Women, the same reality holds true in medicine: women’s health has historically been understudied and suffers from a lack of adapted data, especially when it comes to the heart.

“Women’s health affects us all. As a feminist, striving for greater equality requires a commitment to medical research to ensure our specific needs are finally taken into account when it comes to prevention, diagnoses, and treatments.”

A personal connection to the Montreal Heart Institute

Ms. Pelchat's contributions stem not only from her intellectual convictions, but also from personal experience. After undergoing an aortic valve replacement and then receiving care for a stroke, she is extremely grateful to the MHI’s medical teams, surgeons, and care staff for saving her life.

Her emotional connection with the MHI is a palpable one: she considers it to be a vital collective asset with which her own life is now deeply intertwined. She also believes that it is an immense privilege to have access to this type of expertise right here in Quebec. Through her philanthropic gesture, Ms. Pelchat wants to honour exceptional individuals and inspire other donors to support research, education, care, and prevention in order to protect more lives.
