This article is adapted from the sixth edition of the Foundation’s magazine.
Alain Gignac has served as the Foundation’s Chief Executive Officer for the past six years, bringing his characteristic energy and determination to the role. He combines a unique ability to turn ideas into action with a talent for bringing teams together. His curiosity, distinctive vision, and empathetic leadership have guided the organization’s development and amplified its mission.
This vitality has also shone through in how he communicates. He shies away from a linear path, preferring to take a more winding course sprinkled with jokes, metaphors, and asides— but always leaving a nugget of insight. Within the organization, he is known for his humour, candour, and skill in aligning people and ideas.
As he passes the torch, we wanted to reflect on his six-year tenure, explore what has guided his engagement, highlight the transformations he has championed, and recognize the foundations he has laid for the future. At the heart of it all is his thirst for knowledge. While he was initially drawn to the Foundation’s mission, it was the tangible impact of philanthropy in cardiology that sparked his deep and enduring commitment.
Alain isn’t one to shoulder everything on his own. He understands the value of bringing the right people together, at the right time, around the right challenges. Collaboration is his guiding principle, and he sees talent as a collective responsibility. There’s also the sheer pleasure of watching what teams can achieve when they are properly motivated, respected, and empowered
A career communicator, he places a premium on crafting clear, high-quality messages. “But who are we talking to?” is a question he’s been known to ask more than once.
“I’m convinced that at least half of all organizational problems are rooted in miscommunication.”
A common mistake, in his view, is assuming that a message is understood simply because it has been delivered. He believes that a vision will remain theoretical unless it is circulated, reflected on, fully understood, and embraced by its intended audience
Reflecting on the highlights of his tenure, he focused on shifts in mindset rather than flashy achievements. On changing how things were done, opening new spaces, and aligning tools with the Foundation’s vision. Within this trajectory, a shift in editorial and content strategy played a significant role.
The goal was to build stronger connections with audiences, make the content striking and relevant, and develop a more assertive brand image. “I don’t want to ask people for money. I want them to feel inspired to give.”
In the coming years, the language will revolve less around revenue and more around capacity—the capacity to attract talent, back key projects, intensify development, and share knowledge beyond our walls.
Shaped by this vision, the Foundation will serve as a catalyst, helping to create the conditions to go farther, faster, and with greater reach, through the right partnerships, initiatives, and conversations—the ultimate goal being, in his words, “to accelerate the MHI’s development.”
And here, he is staunch in his belief that nothing of lasting value can be built in a silo. Collaboration for him isn’t an empty buzzword—it’s an ethos.
To the person stepping into the role, he leaves behind an approach marked by swift insight and measured action. This starts with believing in what you’re doing—“not blindly, but realistically.” Stay anchored in the cause, focus on meaningful action, resist the pull of constant urgency. Make room for thinking ahead, anticipating, and being creative.
His perspective can be summed up in one line: “If you know where you’re going, you have the time you need to create.”
This embodies what has defined his leadership: independent thinking, a pragmatic outlook, a genuine concern for people, and an unwavering determination to balance progress with purpose.
Ultimately, his legacy won’t be defined by projects, strategic shifts, or outcomes. It will lie in his way of working, which is rooted in candour, openness, a steadfast commitment to excellence, a constant desire to push further, and an ability to rally people around a shared set of values.
Because in the end, it’s all about the people who have inspired him and his abiding conviction that work is at its most meaningful when it allows projects to thrive and people to flourish.
If Alain’s heart could speak, here’s what it would say:
“Above all else, simply: thank you for allowing me to get to know such an extraordinary group of people.”
